Fiber Arts Friday: Casting On

After I settled on a stitch pattern I began to cast on...

A little over half of my intended stitches were crammed on 29-inch US6 circular needles.  I definitely needed longer needles for this project.

It took me a few days to get it done, but I found a 60-inch pair of US6 circular needles at one of my local yarn shops.  whew.

620 stitches cast on.  :-)

... and because I made a mistake about half-way thru the first row, but didn't realize until about half-way thru the second row, I ripped it out and cast on again.

530 stitches this time. I think this will be closer to my intended final length after blocking anyway. :-)

Happy Fiber Arts Friday.  :-)

That is a lot of stitches to cast on! Can't wait to see your completed scarf! (Is that black or dark blue?)

And I thought casting on 385 stitches was a lot! Please tell us what it's going to be, but then whatever it is, it's going to be very pretty in that yarn.

I can so relate. I just started a circular shawl that's worked from the outside. Had to cast on 1800 stitches. It takes me about 3hours to knit one round. Looking forward to seeing the completed item.

Good luck with the project! Starting can be really tricky sometimes - I can't tell you how many times I started and restarted my Inspira Cowl, and it involved far fewer cast-on stitches. :)

The yarn is handspun (by me) Black Wonder Why Huacaya Alpaca.

It will be a scarf. I have an idea in my head of what it will look like but I am sorta making it up as I go. :-)

@Melissa - 1800 stitches? Holy cow!!

Yikes! That's a lot of stitches to work with. I'm not sure if I'd like a project that begins or ends with that many. I can't wait to see what this becomes.

Holy cast-on! I'm guessing you'll be decreasing all the way through this project. I was listening to KnitMore Girls last week and GiGi was talking about how much she loves a shawl that you cast on the large side and decrease down to nothing. I guess that would make it easier to keep going at some point. Kudos to you on the black yarn...makes my eyes hurt just thinking about it, LOL

I think casting on and doing that first row are my least favorite part of knitting... The yarn is very pretty.

Woah. Six hundred and what? Somehow my method of counting twice and getting the same number just wouldn't work here. Good that you use the marker trick!
