Fiber Arts Friday: Raw Camel

I've mentioned my Personal Rare Fiber Dealer a few times (bear, bearrocky mountain goat).

Well, it turns out his sister does not want to be outdone...

1/2 ounce Raw Camel

They were on a family vacation this summer and saw a few shedding camels at a preserve.  So she asked if it would be ok to bring some raw fiber home for me.

I love that my cousins are so supportive of my fiber-y obsession.  :-)

Happy Fiber Arts Friday.

  1. What great "suppliers" you have. It must be so interesting to try out all those unusual fibers.

  2. Now, that looks like something that might take awhile to sort out. How do you get rid of the VM?

  3. Any ideas as to what you will do with this? I'm always amazed at how you folks take something like this and turn it into something beautiful!

  4. Very interesting. When I first clicked on your page, I thought "what on earth is that?" You must show how it turns out.

  5. I'm with Vivian - that is going to take a few rounds of carding, eh? The color is wonderful, though - you can exhibit truth in advertising - camel colored? Why yes, directly from camel. :)

  6. I'll pick it with a retractable dog brush, give it a bath and then most likely pick it again. At that point I'll have to decide if I want to card it into rolags or spin straight from the cloud.

I'm not certain how I will use these fibers. I don't have enough of any of them to do anything large, so most likely they will be accents.

  7. Hmmm .... wonder what's in my city block neighborhood I could collect fur from ... alas nothing.

Happy cleaning! I have some camel, but didn't spin a whole lot of it. I couldn't keep the slubs out!

  9. You are more patient than I am. That looks like a big ol' mess to clean and prep. I'm sure you are going to have fun though...and make a beautiful mini-skein out of it.

  10. @Beth - I'll be happy to take that camel off your hands. ;-)

@Chez - I love your stories about living in Qatar. It has always seemed like a far-away, exotic place.

  11. I collected some camel yarn several years ago, gleaned from around the edge of the camel enclosure at the Cotswold wildlife park. I was very frustrated that there were huge lumps lying around *inside* the enclosure that I could not get at. It took forever to get the veg matter out of it and although bits were beautifully soft most of it was quite coarse and hairy. Most if it will be now joining my beekeeper quilt as a hexipuff.
Hope you enjoy playing with yours
    thanks for sharing

  12. Whoa, my first thought was "archaeological find?" Looks like it has bones in it. Have fun! It's always interesting to try out new fibers. I have some processed camel fiber here and it is very soft and such a beautiful color.
