I have knit ...I know what you mean about the lace. I have knit lace exactly one time. An edging for a pair of pillow cases as a gift for my mother in law. I allowed myself one year for the process...and it took 11 months to get it done. It looks wonderful on your shawl though...maybe I should give it another go...something a little less ambitious.
